Which Copilot is which? said: the free Copilot Chat cannot open your files, and an answer drawn from your own email proves you have the paid licence. Since Microsoft's July 2026 update, Copilot Chat in Outlook can read your inbox, calendar and some files without that licence, so the test could point the wrong way. It now says: an answer from your email proves nothing on its own; check the Basic or Premium label Microsoft now shows in its apps.

Where does Copilot send your data? said: choosing a model changes nothing about Microsoft's data commitments, which hold whichever company built the model. Anthropic's models are excluded from Microsoft's EU Data Boundary and its in-country processing commitments, which is why Microsoft switches them off by default in the EU, EFTA and UK. It now says: the no-training commitment holds when Claude does the work, the EU Data Boundary does not, and which organisations get Claude switched on by default.
